I have been dealing with a new manager ( their first manager role ) who continues to either forget details of a project at meetings or finds even the most minute detail to “value add” often months down the road on a feature that has been discussed coded tested and finalized.
I have had to re-explain and walk through every detail of projects wasting sometimes hours to bring them up to speed, which spawns more confusion and I have to document in front of them or recite notes back to the point where It is making me think I am working in an alternative universe.
They were perplexed when I mentioned that we had reviewed certain things previously and their response was that they they have a billion other things going on and they can’t remember everything.... and essentially ask dozens of questions in hopes to jog their own memory to save face or simply nod and say ok as if they knew how a section of code is working, which they don’t, which only makes things more frustrating. Rather than just saying “hey I’ve been busy could you run through this with me” they do the opposite to save face and be “managerial” by asking question after question trying to figure it out in their mind.
Having to explain from the ground up each time along with this persons lack of open honesty says to me that either this person isn’t as seasoned a developer as they mentioned in their past and/or they are struggling to manage in general or are a control freak.
I am not entirely sure how to handle going forward as documenting seemed to do more harm than good, other than just having to seek a different job at a new company and hope I don’t run into another bad situation.
Any tips or suggestions?
