API blocked by CORS

I recently purchased a key for an API that I want to use for a project. I can access the API using a simple get request with a few parameters, but if I make an ajax call to this API I get blocked by CORS. I am somewhat new to working with APIs so I am a little confused as to why this would happen. What is the point of a public API if you can only use it on the same domain?
